A visit and trekking on Vinicunca, the Rainbow Mountain or the Mountain of Seven Colors, is perfect for those travelers that do not have the time or energy to do the complete 5-7 day trekking of the sacred mountain Ausangate, also known as the Roof of Cusco. The beautiful colors of its rocks have made Vinicunca a favorite of photographers or selfie-takers. This tour combines a visit to this unique mountain with an authentic and local experience by visiting the nearby indigenous communities and share some time with them.
There’s a lot to do today so this tour has a very early start! At 5am, your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and you’ll head south on a two hour drive to the indigenous community of Chari in Checacupe, where the women weavers’ association “Pallay Lliqlla” will first welcome you before serving a delicious local breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll continue the trip to Pitumarca with its beautiful landscapes. Finally, we will arrive to the village of Chillca, traditionally inhabited by llama and alpaca shepherds known as the guardians of Ausangate. There we will begin our 3-hour walk (about 7 km). Along the way there will be fantastic views of the Apu Ausangate, breathtaking scenery and small lagoons. From the foot of the mountain of seven colors, we are only 400 meters short until we reach its summit (at a height of approx. 5100 masl), but those last meters are the hardest.
We’ll arrive to Vinicunca’s summit around 1pm. We’ll have enough time to enjoy the amazing view and take lots of photos before the walk back down. We’ll then take the bus back to Chari where we’ll eat another great meal prepared by the ladies of Pallay Lliqlla. We’ll also have some time to relax and reflect upon the whole experience of the day. Around 5:30pm, we’ll head back to Cusco (arrival around 8pm).
Duration: Full-day of 15 hours hours (5am – 8pm)
