This Lima food tour takes you to experience Peruvian gastronomy and life in completely brand new and authentic ways!
We’ll start our Lima food tour with a short walk towards the market where your bilingual guide will give you some brief background on Lima, its history, its cultures, and how it all manifests in Peruvian dishes.
"Yesterday I went on the Lima food tour. I LOVED the vibe of the Surquillo Market, where Connie showed us around for a couple of hours! I discovered so many new foods yesterday! We tried different cheeses, fresh fruits, drinks and Peruvian menus. The highlight was definitely the stop at Señora Rosa. She made us some amazing fresh ceviche of snails, scallops and she has much more to choose from! Her market fresh ceviche is soooo much better than what I had tasted in restaurants before!." C.B.
Enjoy tasting regional meals, fruits, cheeses, liquors, drinks, and sweets, all the while chatting and laughing with our enthusiastic friends in the market who are always so eager to share their favorite flavors.
For seafood lovers and those who will try anything once, we will show you how to prepare a ceviche in the market itself. You get to select fresh catches of the day that pique your curiosity for your dish (for example fish, scallops, mussels, squid, octopus, abalone, or even sea urchin!) and see on the spot how this timeless Peruvian classic is “cooked.”
Carefully pace your eating and always save some room in your stomach! We then continue to meander through the market, tasting a large variety of dried snacks, side dishes, fresh fruits, time-honored liquors that will surely give you a nice jolt, and succulent juices you won’t easily find on just any restaurant menu.
If you enjoy “superfoods” such as quinoa, chia, maca, sacha inchi, and others, we will show you the best places to shop and purchase some to take home with you. It will likely be a fraction of the price you’ll find at home, since there’s no import tax on these locally sourced products.
Whether you love to EAT or just want to see what the Peruvian food hype is all about, our Lima food tour is definitely an authentic, alternative Peru food & market tour that foodies can’t miss.
See a side of Limeño life far from the touristic districts… In the afternoon, we’ll take you to a part of Lima that is very much off the beaten path. First we will visit one of the largest cemeteries in the world, which is very different from other cemeteries around Lima and the world and learn more about the cultural traditions in Peru.
The highlight of the tour is the visit to Lima’s pueblos jovenes or human settlements, the Peruvian favela, where colorful houses of rustic materials are built on the hillsides. These neighborhoods are the poorest areas of the city, but at the same time they are rich in diversity and have some of the most hardworking and friendliest people you will ever meet. We focus on optimism and the hope and efforts for a better life for their children while we learn more about their daily lives and about positive initiatives that are changing lives.
"This was such an excellent Lima tour and none like any other I've been on before. It was truly a moving experience. I learned so much about the resiliency, resourcefulness and goodness of people from the families we met on the tour. There was such an incredible sense of community and feeling of hope that you could feel very strongly." D.S.
A local guide will show us around her neighborhood located on the slopes of the sandy hills of Lima’s outskirts and will show you some of the innovative social and environmental projects that have been set up by a local NGO. The aim of this experience is a genuine intercultural experience since we will visit and interact with several locals. We will learn more about daily life in this harsh environment but will also get the chance to be introduced to some of the efforts carried out to improve the situation.
On different days, we visit different projects and different NGOs. One project focuses for instance on the rights and empowerment of domestic workers, while another focuses on environmental awareness for kids and teenagers.
