This Lima and Cusco tour takes in some of Peru’s famous sights and goes beyond them for a more local experience. Visit off the beaten track places and explore the capital beyond the usual tourist zones, to meet local people and find out more about their lives. During this 10 day holiday, you will explore Peru’s extraordinary archaeological sites – including Machu Picchu, Pisaq, Ollantaytambo and Pachacamac – while also getting to know the Peru of today, meeting local people from all kinds of backgrounds. Throughout the trip, you can enjoy Peru’s wonderful cuisine, learn about its social issues and visit some great projects and initiatives striving to improve the lives of Peruvians today.
|Day 1||You’ll get an authentic introduction into Peruvian gastronomy on a visit to a local market. You’ll discover the incredible variety of food from the coast, Andes and jungle of Peru. Best of all, you’ll get to taste all of it as well! In the afternoon, you’ll visit Lima’s beautiful colonial center with its main squares, colourful architecture and some hidden gems. Meals included: Breakfast and lunch at the market.|
|Day 2||Get ready for an authentic and intercultural experience that takes you off the beaten path to some alternative sights with as highlight one of Lima’s human settlements, where we visit a social project and learn about daily life in this harsh environment through responsible encounters with locals. Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.|
|Day 3||Today you’ll learn more about the fascinating pre-Inca and Inca history of Lima as well as present day Lima! On this tour, you’ll visit the impressive archaeological complex of Pachacamac in the morning and you’ll go off the beaten path in the afternoon when visiting a local neighborhood with several workshops of talented artisans. Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.|
|Day 4||Today’s programme is up to you! In the morning, you have the choice between 3 different museums: the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the famous Larco Herrera Museum in a beautiful mansion or the Memory Museum, focusing on the internal conflict and terrorism in Peru of the 1980s and 1990s. In the afternoon, you’ll visit the bohemian neighborhood of Barranco with its beautiful old villas and the Bridge of Sighs, where you can make a wish if you can cross it without breathing! Your guide will show you some local art shops and perhaps you can make a stop to have some of the best Peruvian coffee of the country.|
|Day 5||You’re headed to Cusco today! You’ll take it easy today to get used to the altitude. Your guide will show you the highlights of the city, including the Plaza de Armas, the artistic neighbourhood of San Blas and the Incan Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha). Meals included: Breakfast.|
|Day 6||Today you’ll visit an indigenous Andean community and learn more about their way-of-life but also their current struggles as well as initiatives to keep their traditions alive. Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.|
|Day 7||You’ll visit some of the Sacred Valley’s highlight today, including the Inca citadel of Saqsaywaman and Pisaq with its ancient temples and plazas, surrounded by the hillside agricultural terraces. You won’t get enough of the views of this hilltop Inca site. Your guide will add a bit of a local flavour on the way by visiting a local chicheria, a local bar where they serve the typical Andean drink chicha. Meals included: Breakfast.|
|Day 8||You’ll return to the Sacred Valley today to visit the highlights of its Western part. First stop is at the unusual Inca ruins of Moray, mostly consisting of several terraced circular depressions. It is believed that it was an agricultural experimental station. Your guide will then take you back to the present reality and culture with a visit to the Chinchero weaving community and a women’s co-op focusing on fair-trade and providing indigenous women fair work. Their work is truly amazing! You’ll also have a delicious local lunch at the women’s co-op. After lunch, you’ll head to Ollantaytambo, where you’ll first visit the Inca ceremonial site before you head to your hotel for the night. Sleep early tonight because tomorrow is an early and busy day! Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.|
|Day 9||You’ll get up really early today to take the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, the town near Machu Picchu. Enjoy the beautiful views and see how the landscape changes from mountains to jungle. In Machu Picchu, you’ll first get a guided tour of this World Heritage site and then you’ll have plenty of time to explore it by yourself. In the late afternoon, you’ll take the train back to Cusco. Meals included: Breakfast.|
|Day 10||It has been a busy few days but today you can sleep a bit longer! You’ll have the morning free to explore Cusco a bit more, do some last-minute souvenir shopping or relax and do some people watching on the Plaza de Armas. In the afternoon, you’ll fly back to Lima. Meals included: Breakfast.|
