This private half-day tour takes you off the beaten path to a different and authentic side of Lima, where locals live and work. A day full of responsible cultural immersion, local culture, social impact and learning. It is a shorter version of about 5 hours of our Full-day Authentic Lima tour, for those who have less time. It is a private and flexible tour, so you can start whenever you want, or you can combine it with an other half-day tour.
On this private Lima tour, you’ll visit a local artisan, a social project, have lunch at a local family’s house and learn about daily life in Lima’s human settlements. You will not only learn interesting historical, political and cultural facts but most importantly, you will meet many amazing locals who work very hard to improve their community. Importantly, the Authentic Lima Tour focuses on positive initiatives and hope.
Pick-up from hotels in central areas. Pick-up at cruise shuttle stop or airport available for an additional fee.
10am or 12:30pm (or you can request a different time)
The half-day tour starts with a visit to the second largest cemetery in the world. This is truly a unique place and not to be missed if you’re interested in local culture or photography. It is different to any other cemetery you’ve seen before! You’ll learn more about Andean burial culture and enjoy some great views of the dry hills of Lima.
After the visit to the cemetery, we visit a local lady who started her own artisan workshop in her house. She will share her interesting story and show you her handmade art. Next up is lunch! Our lovely and talented local cook welcomes us to her home with a delicious Peruvian lunch. She can take into account any food restrictions, so please let us know if you’re vegetarian or if you have allergies.
After lunch, the local guide tells us more about the community as well as the local project that your visit supports. In addition, on some days we’ll see the kids participating in the activities! On other days, we’ll undoubtedly meet some of them on our walk. They are very eager to come and say hi to their visitors.
Even though living conditions are harsh here, there is a strong community spirit. It is filled with amazing people who work very hard to improve their community. The visit focuses on hope, optimism and positive initiatives.
Your visit benefits the local community in different ways. First of all, it provides an (additional) income to several community members, including the cook and the local guide. Secondly, your visit supports the local project of Jugando Aprendo, which works especially with minors who do domestic work and their families as well as other local children and teens. Additionally, the tour price includes a donation to this great local organisation, ran by our local community guides.
Besides financial benefits, the interest and attention of people who came from all over the world increases the pride of the local people in their communities. The local people on the tour are all in a way community leaders who work hard to improve their environment and community. The admiration of visitors from across the world reinforces their engagement. Too often, they are looked down on by fellow Peruvians from more affluent neighborhoods.
Sometimes, real friendships and longterm engagements have resulted from our tours. For instance, a young aspiring cook is studying to become a chef thanks to people who met him during our tour. We love to see more of this happening too!
